Position Summary:

Incumbent is responsible for performing as a training specialist in the development and implementation of national interagency training courses and programs in the disciplines of fire management and/or aviation management and related areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Duties listed are at the full performance level GS11.
  • Ensure that these agencies are fully represented in the project and that their policies, procedures, techniques, and philosophies are incorporated in the resulting instructional products.
  • Plans, schedules, coordinates, and provides personal leadership and guidance to interagency workshops, task forces, committees, subject matter experts, contractors, and others involved with completion of the project.
  • Prepares/makes formal presentations to line officers, fire managers, training administrators, and others regarding assigned programs, the interagency fire and aviation management training programs and procedures.
  • Recommends development by various resources, including agency field offices or regional training centers, agency or interagency task forces, universities, or private contractors.
  • Manages course presentations and related training activities and evaluates instruction to improve the training. Develop and instruct training courses and materials for firefighters, fire crews, fire overhead, and fire management positions.
  • Performs fire management and suppression duties at the unit leader and above levels on active wildfires. Conducts an analysis of assigned projects to identify approaches for design and development.
  • Provides extensive planning and organization, analyses of accumulated data and information, and considerable coordination and integration with other functional activities and user agencies.
  • Provides the leadership, direction, and the majority of work required to ensure that the courses are developed in accordance with established national interagency procedures and standards and management objectives.
  • Serves as a training advisor and consultant to cooperating agencies regarding the development and implementation of fire and aviation management and related training courses and materials.
  • Prepares a project plan fully describing alternatives and costs and presents the plan for management decision.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • This is a Test Designated Position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: Provided instruction on a variety of topics; Provided basic technical advice or assistance to managers regarding the management and operation of a training program; Reviewed and edited existing training documents and made recommendations to supervisor concerning content.
  • Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
