Position Summary:

The incumbent oversees a comprehensive, professional counseling program for students assigned to the Job Corps Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Career development counseling includes consideration of the total individual student?s potential, development and student career plans and goals in accordance with the Department of Labor Policy requirements.
  • Analyzes and interprets educational and vocational data and assesses various factors as they affect the findings of individual students? aptitudes and interests.
  • Serves as a professional counselor providing the full range of general educational and career development counseling to Job Corps students.
  • Performs meaningful interviews, observation, and documents personal histories. Utilizes other assessment tools to assemble information that is indicative of the student?s psychological status.
  • Provides counseling to students on a wide variety of vocational and educational needs using standard methods, techniques, and approaches which must be adapted or adjusted to fit the individual student needs and situation.
  • May administer standard mental health screening or assessment instruments to assemble material/data that represents a student?s mental health status.
  • Provides individualized counseling sessions to aid students in developing goals for career planning and decisions.
  • Collaborates with mental health center counselors in creating treatment strategy/plan for broad continuum of abnormal actions and behaviors.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required training program within a year of the effective date to this position.
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • May be required to obtain a government drivers license.
  • This is a Test Designated Position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.
  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, related to position;
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

  • Degree: Social Work. Must fulfill all of the requirements for the master’s degree in Social Work in a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
