Position Summary:

Instacart recently acquired Caper AI to help retailers unify the in-store and online shopping experience for customers no matter how they choose to shop. Caper’s cutting-edge, AI-powered shopping carts and automated checkout counters bring together online and offline shopping to create a completely new in-store experience for customers.
In addition to acquiring Caper AI’s technology, we’re delighted to welcome the Caper team to the Instacart family. The global Caper team is based primarily in New York City and Shanghai, China, and will bring new hardware expertise to Instacart’s already deep product and technology team. Together, we’re excited to create new ways for retailers to solve for the ever-changing needs of their businesses and customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize a wide range of storytelling techniques and communicate research insights in a clear, opinionated, and compelling way that influences and leads to action
  • Define new testing methodologies unique to Caper products (human factors, physical testing, computer vision tests) based on existing best practices
  • Define success metrics, goals and testable hypotheses, then plan research activities based on those definitions
  • Work closely with a cross-functional team of product managers, designers, and engineers who are passionate about building products
  • Facilitate and help shape the design and research process
  • Establish and maintain research cadences and a research database
  • Proactively define and execute on an end to end research strategy based on key research questions and business objectives
  • Be a strategic partner to product development teams by sharing insights that identify problems, unsolved user needs and evangelize research methodologies across the company
  • Lead research with users to identify meaningful insights that fuel improvements to our product features and ignite new ones

Required Education & Experience:

  • Proven ability to integrate insights into product design and a user-centered design practice, and influence product strategy through clear, concise and impactful storytelling
  • Expertise in user research, information architecture and interaction design, and clear and compelling written and presentation delivery
  • Deep understanding and experience with various qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and techniques such as in-field research, contextual inquiries and interviewing, usability testing, surveys, workshop facilitation, usage data analysis and triangulation
  • 3+ years conducting research in a consumer-focused product organization – bonus points if the product served multiple customer types
  • Experience conducting research for hardware products a plus
  • Ability to self-manage, self-motivate and deal with large amounts of complexity and ambiguity
  • A passion for user research, the customer and a truly collaborative spirit
  • Degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, Human Factors, Anthropology, a related field or the equivalent experience
  • Experience managing concurrent projects involving cross-functional teams
