Position Summary:

This position is located on the Cass Civilian Conservation Center. The incumbent serves as the Center Safety Officer responsible for planning and implementing the Center Safety program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures proper handling, use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with local/state health department, state or federal level environmental protection agency requirements as applicable.
  • Identify safety and occupational hazards and for determination of elements giving rise to mishaps.
  • Provides technical expertise to managers with regard to risk factors, OSHA requirements, proper selection and use of personal protective equipment, and safe work practices.
  • Prepare formal training materials and communicate standard safety and occupational health techniques and steps to participants.
  • Provides technical safety and occupational health guidance to Center management and work supervisors responsible for hazardous and non-hazardous activities to ensure the physical safety of students and employees.
  • Monitors the project(s) during the course of the construction to ensure compliance with applicable safety related standards.
  • Interpret and to explain reasons for and purposes of safety and occupational health laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Performs or assists with inspections of Center facilities and work sites to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for training facilities to include environmental health inspections.
  • Serves as Center Hazardous Materials and Asbestos Coordinator.
  • Recommend possible courses of action effective in the elimination or control of hazards detected.
  • Prepares Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for Center facilities, work projects and Center activities.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain and maintain all applicable local, State and National OSHA Certifications as required.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
  • A master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a safety or occupational health field (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or graduate degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
