Position Summary:
These positions are located on a Forest Service unit, where the incumbent serves as a Recreation Management Specialist. Responsibilities include planning, programming, and executing work plans and projects for wilderness, recreation, trails, special uses, and other related programs in Region 3.
Key Responsibilities:
- Communicate program information to the public regarding agency, management practices, rules, and regulations relating to wilderness, trails, specials uses, recreation and related programs.
- Provide expert advice in the administration of wilderness, recreation, trails, special uses programs and management activities.
- Responsibilities listed are at the full performance level.
- Provide expertise and advice in assessing current recreation use, type, and standards, and in long-range planning, maintenance, and operation of recreation facilities and trails.
- Review and monitor recreation, wilderness and related land management activities and recommends ways to achieve goals/objectives.
- Oversee the unit’s wilderness, recreation, trails, special uses, and other related programs budget and coordinates with other staff groups.
- Provide technical and administrative supervision to subordinate employees.
- Strategize, develop, and review proposals for new projects, or proposed revisions of existing plans or activities.
Required Education & Experience:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related;
- Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

- Positions may be filled as career ladders (GS-09/11), or may be filled at (GS-09) level only, or may be filled at the full performance level (GS-11) only, dependent upon the individual unit’s needs.
- You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Participated in surveys and studies of wilderness areas, recreation facilities, trails such as determining use numbers and patterns and/or facility needs; Processed special use applications by coordinating with the applicant and monitoring the authorized activity; Inspected wilderness and recreation special uses, administering or monitoring special use authorizations for outfitter and guides and recreation events.
- Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
