Position Summary:

The incumbent of this position is entitled to a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) of 2.01% for 2023 in addition to basic salary.

There are currently only two vacancies to be filled; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops methods and procedures for the use of test equipment and computer systems to detect, troubleshoot, and fix problems.
  • Proper continuous operation (24/7/365) is monitored, and defects are addressed quickly to minimize impacts on the whole system.
  • Plans, designs, and fabricates electronic and mechanical systems as part of the installation of new seismic stations, relay stations, and the relocation or upgrade of existing stations.
  • Must exercise independent initiative and resourcefulness in solving problems.
  • Keeps proper records, including, but not limited to, station maintenance histories, field files, landowner information, and equipment/station databases.
  • Maintains the existing volcano monitoring networks of analog/digital equipment and relay stations by either the AVO, HVO, CVO, CalVO, YVO, or VDAP.

Required Education & Experience:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience may include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
  • Selectee must provide a valid state driver’s license & safe driving record.
  • Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
