Job Overview:

Our Bus Fleet Maintenance Engineering Office is seeking an Equipment Engineer to provide engineering expertise on a wide range of bus fleet vehicle projects, systems, and upgrades to deliver performance consistent with corporate and customer service goals. The Equipment Engineer will investigate systemic issues across all sub-systems of the current Diesel Bus Fleet and will also be a “resident expert” in one or more major vehicle sub-systems. There will also be opportunities to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams in design change reviews, operational performance, asset management and research and development into next generation fleet platforms and technologies including Battery Electric Buses.

What you’ll do:

  • Liaises with a variety of internal departments to monitor final projects against contractual performance and design requirements
  • Provides technical engineering expertise and direction during the investigation and analysis of serious, systemic, or safety related equipment failures or design flaws for new equipment; develops and recommends correction actions to be taken by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
  • Provide new equipment performance feedback to Engineering & Asset Management Team, as well as component/vehicle manufacturers
  • Prepare Engineering Investigation Reports and Root Cause Analysis of emergent equipment failures as needed. Investigates age, maintenance, and design-related performance trends
  • Liaises with other Engineering Teams to recommend OEM upgrade programs for new and current equipment to resolve design concerns and meet contract performance requirements as well as maintenance, customer service and safety requirements
  • Provide on-the-ground Engineering technical support to Equipment Maintenance Team, Fleet Operations and maintenance contractors
  • Make recommendations for the installation and long-term viability of field-tested replacement components or sub-systems
  • Create reports to support maintenance planning functions, continuous improvement, and key performance reporting
  • Researches, develops, maintains, and advises on guidelines related to corporate best practices for developing or maintaining bus fleets
  • Develops and distributes manuals, drawings and technical service bulletins to Equipment Maintenance and Fleet Operations
  • Monitors quality control processes and procedures undertaken
  • Collaborates with Equipment Maintenance Operations Team and Technical Services Team to investigate systemic failures that arise within the current fleet; generates regular progress reports for proposed solutions and countermeasures
  • Monitors contract work assignments for adherence to timelines and the achievement of performance objectives outlined in the Agreement terms and conditions; develops and implements action plans to address performance gaps

What you’ll have:

  • Experience with procurement processes and managing vendors to source and deliver externally provided products and services
  • Working knowledge of tools, gauges and equipment associated with the engineering, testing and/or servicing of the various systems and components for Transit or Automotive Vehicles
  • Automotive product development experience would be considered an asset
  • Project management principles and practices, including budget and schedule controls, to lead and direct cross functional teams and consultants engaged in simultaneous projects and monitor project activities for adherence to timelines, budgets, and project performance objectives
  • A valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license that meets the corporate standard for a good driving record is required
  • Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation skills to develop technical specifications
  • Functional knowledge of electric propulsion systems (hybrid and all-electric) considered an asset
  • Working knowledge of rules and regulations established by Transport Canada (TC), Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and the American Public Transit Association (APTA) would be considered an asset
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering or a diploma in Engineering Technology – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
  • Minimum four (4) years of related experience, providing a solid background in the maintenance and/or the design of electrical/mechanical systems in transit buses and/or coaches for fleet operations
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc.)
