Position Summary:

Primary purpose and responsibility are for transporting Reusable Medical Device (RMD) to and from clinics, modules, operating room, emptying cart washer, removing filters from surgical instrument trays, pushing and pulling over 200 pounds, and assisting in decontamination and preparation areas. The duties require basic knowledge of sterile techniques within the SPS department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Disassembles the RMD and determines the correct cleaning method, such as, but not limited to, ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers/disinfectors, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions.
  • Inspects, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization, such as, but not limited to steam, Sterrad, and high-level disinfecting scope re-processors.
  • Performs and documents daily cleaning, operational checks, and records for all processes and equipment.
  • Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical reusable medical device (RMD) in the decontamination area and may receive noncritical equipment as well.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
  • Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation.
  • Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Certification. None
  • Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period.
  • Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U. S. programs.
  • English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
