Position Summary:

As our new Lead PM you’ll be working with Heads of Digital and Service Owners to lead our overall probation product strategy and vision for HMPPS.  You will work with a number of digital teams that are already delivering and developing great products across a large diverse portfolio of work. This role needs a strong leader who can challenge, create and own the product strategy.  Your goal is to optimise the overall value of an area of the justice system by contributing to solving complex and often challenging problems through the creation of great digital products.  It’s a really exciting and challenging time right now, you can make a considerable difference,  helping us to achieve great outcomes and bring your product leadership to our vibrant product community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support multidisciplinary product teams through discovery, alpha, beta and live phases of development, turning vision into reality and continuously improving.
  • Have and maintain knowledge of the digital and technology landscape to improve the delivery of great services here at MoJ and across public services in the UK.
  • Be a ‘product leader’, applying your expert level product management skills in leadership teams and the Product community here at MoJ. You will own and be responsible for creating an articulate vision, achievable goals and continually iterate the product strategy and roadmap for an area of the justice digital portfolio
  • Lead engagement with stakeholders, users and partners, you will advocate and be a champion of user needs, product, and MoJs mission through demos, blogging, speaking at events and facilitating workshops.
  • You will support and lead a thriving , vibrant professional community of product managers, working with the Head of profession to teach, coach, mentor and continually contribute to mature an engaged product network across MoJ.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Great communication/influencing – developing and selling a product strategy to secure funding, buy-in and support for your products.
  • Product managing – the core skills of product management, particularly high volume digital products in fast-paced environments, working with multidisciplinary teams, agile teams. You’ll be working to at least ‘expert’ level, capable of defining your own approaches and coaching others, and aware of what other sectors are doing.
  • Strategic ownership – the core strategic skills of product management, building the overall value proposition, business model, vision and roadmap that enable us to focus on outcomes, not outputs.
  • Strong communication skills that enable you to engage with people through a range of channels, explain what you are doing and how.
  • Recruiting, coaching and line management of product managers, identifying learnig and development opportunities for teams and individuals.
  • Led by users – User-centred design is at the heart of our work. You’ll be working to at least ‘expert’ level in this area: we make promises to solve problems, the capability of defining problems from scant information, and understanding how the problem fits into the bigger picture
  • Working in/or with public sector organisations – cross organisational working, navigating spend control processes and procurement.
