Position Summary:
Incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties in support of fisheries/wildlife including monitoring of amphibians and reptiles and their habitats. Serves as a crew leader for several positions up to grade six level. Expected to backpack to monitoring sites and camp typically 8-10 days.
Key Responsibilities:
- Camp in wilderness locations for extended periods (over a week at a time) at high elevation, rugged conditions where temperatures often drop below freezing.
- Assist in all aspects of preparation, organization and implementation of monitoring and studies.
- Oversee implementation of field work, providing guidance and troubleshooting of questions and problems
- Prepare for and organize field work including complex scheduling and organizing of surveys.
- Analyze data and assist in writing and preparation of scientific reports and publications to disseminate monitoring and study findings related to wildlife or fisheries.
- Lead a team of employees to conduct field surveys and other work associated with monitoring and studies.
- Assist in identifying, distributing, and balancing the workload and tasks among employees.
- Conduct monitoring and studies of amphibians and reptiles in aquatic systems to determine numbers, environmental conditions, and the condition of the species and its habitat and factors affecting the health and welfare of the species and its habitat.
- Conduct field work with field crews in high-elevation remote wilderness locations that may be off-road and off-trail and in rugged conditions where temperatures often drop below freezing.
- Backpack into study locations that may be off-road and off-trail and requiring route-finding and locating study sites using compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit
- Provide expertise on amphibians and reptiles to team, Agency, and partners.
- Manage and maintain project database to ensure well-organized high-quality data
- Manage and maintain field equipment in good working condition and available when needed
- Assist in administrative work such as hiring, crew trainings, and other project coordination.
- Use personal computer systems and associated software packages to record, store, verify, tabulate, summarize and analyze data.
- Analyze data with statistical software and geographic information systems.
Required Education & Experience:
- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
