Position Summary:
The Director is required by Government Code Section 19818.12 to report (or to record) “…material changes in the duties of any position in his or her jurisdiction”. Key Responsibilities:
- Performs repairs to fire apparatus and support vehicles in the region. This includes rated fire engines, fast attack engines, rural tankers, heavy equipment, and administrative vehicles.
- Mechanical duties involve diagnosis and maintenance work on diesel, gasoline, and hybrid engines; relines and performs brake repairs on vehicles with both air and hydraulic brakes; repairs and overhauls fire pumps and other general mechanical repairs to fire apparatus. These duties also involve being assigned on extended attack campaign fires, and travel to Cal Fire camp management reviews, fire preparedness exercises, mobile kitchen units (MKU)/ mobile command center (MCC) roundups, and units throughout the state of California.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections and corrective work on heavy fire apparatus and support vehicles on a scheduled routine basis. Preventive maintenance is to be done as outlined in CDF Handbook 6700. Reconciles parts after an incident and annually on region demob trailer, mobile kitchen units (MKU), and mobile command center (MCC).
- Receives specialized training in fire apparatus repair and maintenance as required to become proficient in this position. Assists in presenting training to fire control personnel on apparatus care and maintenance.
- Prepares and completes Shop Work Orders as required to properly report work performed.
- Also completes Faulty Equipment Reports and other detailed reports as necessary.
- Provides technical direction and guidance to other personnel performing preventive maintenance and other mechanical repair work. Instructs Heavy Fire Equipment Operators and other personnel assigned to assist with mechanical repairs. Completes monthly Cal Card and purchase order pay documents to support the mobile equipment repairs for the region vehicles.
- Input work orders in the Electronic Fleet Database system and copies on vehicle files etc.
- Assist unit Hired Equipment coordinator with vendor equipment inspections, file maintenance, and auditing of files. Respond to emergency incidents filling ICS positions of Equipment Technical Specialist (EQTS), Ground Support Unit Leader (GSUL), and General Mechanic (GMEC).
Required Education & Experience:
- Candidate must pass a pre-employment medical evaluation, drug pre-screen test, and be enrolled in the Federal Department of Transportation random pull program.
- Subject to working nights, weekends, or holidays.
- Extended over-night travel is expected throughout the State
