Position Summary:
Gas Technicians are responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operations of the City’s gas distribution system.
Key Responsibilities:
- May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
- Perform semi-skilled and common labor work such as paint and/or wrap pipe, cutting and threading pipe, pipe-fitting, and assisting in other pipeline maintenance as require
- Perform intensive manual labor tasks including digging and backfilling ditches, installing pipe, shoveling up to 15 pounds of weight, standing/walking up to 5 hours at a time, continuous bending, stooping and climbing out of ditches
- Perform plastic pipe fusion with the use of poly fusion and electro fusion equipment and operates line locating equipment and volt meters for taking pipe-to-soil potentials
- Install or repair mains, services, and meter loops. Removes and/or exchanges gas meters as part of maintenance work tasks. Check for stopped meters and houseline pressures using water manometer
- Use small hand tools, tapping, and stopple equipment
- Perform electric arc welding and oxy-acetylene welding. Weld stopple fittings on gas mains and operate stopple equipment
- Inspect equipment and make adjustments and minor repairs to maintain equipment in proper operating condition
- Review and monitor work progress of crew ensuring work is being conducted in accordance with company procedures
- Perform clerical tasks such as completing required forms used to document inspections from work orders. Review all paperwork submitted by subordinates
- Perform the planning and supervision of work crew
Required Education & Experience:
- Successful out of state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas Class A CDL within 90 days of hire
- Valid Texas Class A CDL with Air Brake endorsement required within six (6) months of hire.
- Requires High School Diploma or GED
- Certified as a competent welder by the Gas Department in both oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding or must be certified within six (6) months of hire
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience
- Certified to fuse poly pipe or must be certified within six (6) months of hire
