Position Summary:
The Forester position serves as the Timber Management Officer managing the Forest’s timber program and budget, and integrated resource restoration program and develops integrated vegetation management plans associated with timber sale preparation and special forest products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in integration of programs and budgets to foster efficient restoration of ecosystems.
- Provide advice in all aspects of timber management functions and practices associated with timber management with a focus on integration between program areas.
- Oversee team-based technical field reviews of project implementation of timber sales and integrated resources contracts to assess consistency with organizational direction.
- Maintain liaison with government and non-government organizations such as local operators, collaborative groups, and industry representatives to obtain support and understanding of local programs, timber operations, and management direction.
- Lead the development of short and long-term action plans for integrated vegetation programs and associated budgets
- Take the lead on timber and stewardship programs for the Unit
- Analyze deviations and unusual local situations to determine corrective actions
- Formulate policies, objectives, and priorities as part of natural resource and land management long-range planning
- Organize training in new or improved practices and techniques
- Performs supervisory duties for 20% or less of the time
- Identify restoration work to be included in stewardship contract
Required Education & Experience:
- Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.

- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

- Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
- You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as three or more of the following: Performed vegetation management duties including timber management, harvesting, and timber stand improvement; and/or provided advice and assistance on natural resource management policies and practices; and/or assisted in reviewing or developing standard plans for well-established programs or projects; and/or recommended long and short term plans for natural resources and overall land management planning.
