Position Summary:

In this position, you will serve as Fire Protection Specialist (Training and Safety Officer) responsible for developing and implementing the comprehensive fire protection training, safety and Hazmat programs including Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-Yield Explosives (CBRNE).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and presenting strategic planning and evaluations on fire safety protection to senior leadership.
  • Leading the development and implementation of various Fire Department programs (i.e., training, safety, prevention, special operations, EMS, etc.) OR;
  • Keeping up to date on firefighting technology, tactics, strategy and required adjustments or recommendations for additional training for Fire Department personnel.
  • Wear various Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to include respirators, masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, and armored vests, and equipment.
  • Successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Creating, delivering and managing a Fire or EMS training or safety programs OR;
  • Maintain current EMS certification that was held upon hiring, such as EMTB or EMT-Paramedic. The position can obtain a higher level of certification, e.g., moving from an EMT-Basic to an EMT-Paramedic.
  • Leading, conducting and instructing department personnel in all phases of fire protection, hazmat, response, technical rescue, fire prevention, emergency medical and disaster preparedness techniques.
  • Participate in tests and exercises during non-duty work hours, to include nights, weekends, holidays, and when recalled.
  • Participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Perform temporary duty travel for the purpose of obtaining specialized training and other fire and emergency services duties.
  • Report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, e.g., mandatory overtime, subject to recall to duty.
  • Drive a government vehicle and maintain a valid State driver’s license.
  • Subject to periodic ( e.g., annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Developing and revising training objectives, lesson plans, performance standards, training bulletins and presentations, utilizing training videos, flip charts and other visual aids.
  • Serving as an Incident Safety Officer as emergency scenes and training evaluations per department’s standard operation guidelines and procedures to develop and distribute health and safety information, investigate all occupational injuries, exposures and fatalities or other potentially hazardous conditions involving department vehicles, equipment or facilities.
  • Providing Fire Department senior leadership with statistics on individual company qualifications and recommends improvements in training and physical fitness programs.
  • Work rotating shifts including weekends, holidays, and overtime when necessary or directed.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into the position.
  • Evaluating fire department protection and prevention programs (i.e., fire/safety training, emergency response plans, hazmat operations etc.) OR;

Required Education & Experience:

  • Confined Space Rescue Technician
  • Fire Instructor III
  • Hazardous Materials Technician
  • Current federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements.

  • You qualify for this position at the GS-10 level (starting salary $68,217) if you possess the following: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-09) in the Federal Service. This experience may have been gained in the federal government, a state or local government, a non-profit organization, the private sector, or as a volunteer; however, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of specialized experience.
  • National Registry EMT (Basic or Paramedic)
  • You must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Selective Service registration required.
