Position Summary:

As a Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) for CIA, you will be part of a select cadre of professionals enabling the Agency’s global intelligence mission through the protection of people, facilities, and systems. Our engineers serve in two concurrent roles: Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), ensuring compliance with recognized building, fire, and life safety codes and the owner’s representative Subject Matter Expert (SME) advancing innovative, cost-effective, and mission-supportive fire protection solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections of new construction and renovations to validate compliance of fire protection/life safety aspects.
  • Design, install, test, troubleshoot, and repair fire protection systems.
  • Conduct comprehensive fire safety audits, inspections, and investigations of Agency locations & operations.
  • Review planning, programming, architectural and engineering designs, specifications, and other technical documents for proposed construction activities to validate compliance with applicable codes and standards and to identify optimal fire protection solutions.
  • Witness acceptance testing and commissioning of fire protection systems and equipment to validate functional performance.
  • Investigate fire and explosion events to determine cause, origin, and contributing factors.
  • Assist in emergency planning, preparedness, and exercises.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with the International Building Code and the NFPA Codes and Standards, to include but not limited to NFPA 1, 13, 70, 72, 75, and 101.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the fire protection aspects of facility design, construction, and commissioning, to include egress, passive fire protection, fire alarm, and fire suppression.
  • You must apply online, while in the United States.
  • Hands-on experience with installation, troubleshooting, repair of fire alarm or fire suppression systems, or an equivalent general mechanical and electrical technical aptitude.
  • Ability to meet the minimum requirements for joining CIA, including U.S. citizenship and a background investigation.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age (dual-national U.S. citizens are eligible).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated experience in architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines to evaluate and critique coordinated integration of fire protection concepts into large facility projects.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in any U.S. state, commonwealth, or district; having passed the fire protection engineering written examination administered by the NCEES.
  • You must successfully complete a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview, and a comprehensive background investigation.
  • You must be willing to move to the Washington, DC, area.
  • At least a 3.0 GPA on a 4-point scale is preferred, but exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances.
  • Completed the manufacturer factory training for a large-scale networked fire alarm product line and possess current manufacturer certification to design and program such equipment and systems.
