Position Summary:

This position serves as a lead operator of heavy equipment on initial attack, fire and fuels management activities and operates this equipment in support of other natural resource projects..

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adjusts equipment attachments for proper positioning and working order, making adjustments without stopping the power unit or the equipment.
  • Operates specialized equipment used in fire suppression, road construction and maintenance and operates a semi-truck with trailer with GCVWR of 80,000 lbs. and may reach up to 120,000 lbs. to haul specialized equipment.
  • Other similar rough features to grade the earth to the general contour desired on trails, roads, canals, tunnels or construction sites.
  • Performs rough grading as well as fine surfacing on flat or rolling terrain.
  • Excavates, backfills, grades or levels earth to rough specifications on all types of terrain. Moves earth on mountains and steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forests, and
  • Operates engineering and construction equipment , such as graders, tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and
  • Large industrial tractors, on all types of terrains, close to buildings, trees, drop-offs, rocks or other obstructions and obstacles.
  • Duties listed are at full performance grade WL-10 Level.
  • Steers and operates by using clutches, levers, brakes and valves according to the slope or tilt.
  • The incumbent is required to have a good degree of mechanical ability and skill to perform preventive maintenance and minor repair of equipment. Transports heavy equipment to job site.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver’s license; a commercial driver’s license (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination.
  • Must possess and maintain a Valid Driver’s License.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
  • This is a Test Designated Position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.

  • Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver?s License (CDL) Class A
