Position Summary:

These positions are located within the Chief Information Office of the USDA Forest Service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install and perform corrective/preventive maintenance of Land Mobile Radio systems.
  • Safely climb towers to perform Land Mobile Radio system installation and corrective or preventive maintenance.
  • The responsibilities are listed at the full performance level.
  • Site access may include hiking, snowshoeing, rafting, boating, helicopter, airplane, watercraft, horseback, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), snowmobile, skis, or snow cats.
  • Provide radio subject matter expertise to local leadership on the forest.
  • Utilize test equipment such as: service monitors, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, time domain reflectometers, and other specialized equipment for the purpose of troubleshooting and maintaining radio systems.
  • Use of personal protective equipment in accordance with established safety guidelines as required to perform work safely.
  • Program authorized radio frequencies into radios, request frequencies, mitigate and deconflict interference issues.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as two or more of the following: Designing, redesigning, fabricating, and modifying radio systems and equipment; and/or diagnosing radio system malfunctions and operating difficulties; and/or developing methods and procedures for maintenance and testing of radio systems and subsystem components

  • The agency tower certification program must be successfully fulfilled no more than six months after being hired, and the employee must recertify periodically as required.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
