Position Summary:
In this position as a Data Scientist on the Regional Data Analytics team for Region 9, you will lead and shape the data analytics processes, strategies and culture for the Region and beyond. You will also partner with senior leadership to identify the opportunities where analytics can make the most impact, as well as collaborate with a team of analysts and other analytics partners in solving novel data-related challenges at FEMA.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identifying, assessing, and recommending relevant new software, statistical techniques, and other tools to enable the Region and FEMA at large to keep up with the latest trends in data science.
- Partnering with others to advance analytics projects that address specific requirements; AND
- Collecting, analyzing, and presenting data on topics from a variety of sources.
- Writing complex data queries and create analytics products using FEMA’s large volumes of data to derive previously unavailable insights to stakeholders internal and external to FEMA.
- Analyzing large volumes of data to meet stakeholder requirements; AND
- Serving as the Region’s data analytics subject matter expert and strengthen the Region’s overall analytical capabilities by setting the standards for analysis approaches, providing feedback on analytics-related products, and mentoring peers on the team and in the Region at large.
- Providing analyses, assessments, or domain knowledge on programs and business processes; AND
- Partnering with stakeholders internal and external to FEMA, including senior leadership, to leverage analytics to improve decision-making capabilities before, during, and after disasters.
- Developing and implementing the Region’s data governance guidelines to ensure compliance with privacy policies, to facilitate appropriate use of data inputs and analytics products, and to enable the Region to more effectively collaborate with others.
- Communicating and presenting analytical and statistical findings to varied audiences, including senior leadership and external stakeholders, to support strategic and tactical recommendations.
Required Education & Experience:
- 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree
- Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
- You qualify for this position at the GS-12 level (starting salary $97,490) if you possess the following: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-11) in the Federal Service. This experience may have been gained in the federal government, a state or local government, a non-profit organization, the private sector, or as a volunteer
