Position Summary:

These positions are located on a Forest Service unit, where the incumbent serves as an Biological Science Technician (Natural Resources). Incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of complex and recurring duties in support natural resource programs in Region 3.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble summary information of natural resource plans and coordinate resources needed for information and analytical reports.
  • Execute field projects to detect, identify, and/or evaluate natural resource problems.
  • Compile natural resource data from aerial and ground surveys as part of a biological project.
  • Resolve administrative and safety concerns related to a project according to prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Communicate routine information clearly in written communication.
  • Conduct analyses through field testing to detect natural resource problems such as water, land, food, plants, animals and soils.
  • Collect samples to test in order to conduct natural resources field studies.
  • Collaborate with team members during field projects to achieve objectives.
  • Utilize computer programs to organize the data for analysis.
  • Maintain records of all data and develop into statistical reports.

Required Education & Experience:

  • You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Utilizing topographic maps, photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions; using a variety of tools to collect and record data such as numbers, measurements, weights, samples, and special notes, and making determinations for easily identifiable corrective action; and preparing data summaries in proper format;
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture);
  • Positions may be filled as career ladders (GS-05/06/07) or (06/07), or may be filled at a single GS level only (05), (06) or at the full performance level (GS-07) only, dependent upon the individual unit’s needs.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
