This role is fundamental to fulfilling Big W’s strategic ambition to become a purpose-led digital retailer enabled by a great store network. With rapidly growing online sales, we are accelerating the evolution of our Digital business, including the transformation of our eCommerce platform into a set of modern, resilient and high performing services.
As the Engineering Chapter Lead, you will be responsible for the capacity, capability, performance and well-being of your Chapter members. In addition to these dimensions of the role that may be supporting multiple squads, you will also be a Tech-Lead within a specific squad. The Tech-Lead dimension of the role will be responsible for the quality and speed with which enabling technology is delivered and supported.
What you’ll do:
- Providing performance feedback and coaching relative to these targets – maximising the potential of people and managing any improvement plans
- Defining personal development plans with Chapter members and ensuring that these are effectively enabled
- Ensuring that the available capability and capacity is optimally assigned to squads
- Collaborate with other Tech Leads, Technology Delivery Managers, the Engineering Practice Manager and Solution Architects to help create and maintain a robust architectural framework and Roadmap.
- Maximising value achieved through Chapter time
- Establishing and facilitating Chapter ceremonies and regular Chapter time
- Ensuring the right capability and capacity exists within the chapter to support squad objectives
- Creating an environment that Chapter members love being a part of
- Ensure that the recommendations of Chapters are being applied in your squad
- Defining objectives and performance criteria for Chapter members in consultation with the relevant Tech Leads and Technology Delivery Managers
- Building a high-trust relationship with the Tech Leads and Technology Delivery Managers that Chapter Members are supporting
- Ensure the Squad is delivering maximum customer and team value
- Understanding the delivery roadmaps for the squads that are enabled by the Chapter and translating these in to a view of the capabilities and capacity that is needed
- Engaging with stakeholders and Chapter members to identify how Chapter time can deliver maximum value for Big W and the members of the Chapter
- Engage Chapter members to understand what motivates and fulfils them
- Leverage Chapter Ceremonies and the outputs from VOT to identify and implement changes that will create the best possible working environment for members
- Recruiting the best possible talent within the budget parameters set for the Chapter
- Lead technology delivery for assigned squad
- Research and apply new industry tools and technologies to improve outcomes in your assigned domain.
- Maximising performance and potential of Chapter members
- For assigned applications / services provide leadership throughout the life-cycle: concept, design, build, test, deploy, release to customers and support.
- Validating the effectiveness of Chapter time from the perspective of members and stakeholders so that continuous improvement occurs
- Champion a Lean Agile mindset to ensure a rapid, effective and efficient velocity is maintained.
- Instil a strong sense of ‘team’ and unite everyone around target outcomes whilst encouraging an inclusive and fun work environment.
What you’ll have:
- Exceptional communication & presentation skills, able to diagrammatically explain complex concepts to any audience.
- Proficient problem solving skills, with a solution-focused approach mixed with a solid sense of pragmatism.
- A dedication and a keen interest in building Clean Architecture systems which process high volumes of data and communicate via Event Driven technologies.
- Very strong experience in writing clean testable code and capability with BDD, TDD patterns & frameworks, and the drive to ensure that coverage in all areas is always as high as possible.
- A sense of tenacious curiosity driving a determination to uncover and understand every performance issue or security vulnerability that exists.
- A strong understanding of best CI/CD and GitOps practices, and exposure to a variety of tools such as Jenkins, Azure DevOps, ArgoCD, Rancher Fleet, etc.
- Experience in large-scale enterprise environments that require building multiple web services and delivering outstanding performance for the end-user.
- Agile software delivery experience
- Minimum 8 or more years professional experience with relevant technologies across React Native, React, NodeJS, Kotlin, Java / .Net and IAC.
- Strong experience with Docker, Kubernetes and other containerization technology.
- A strong desire to both learn and teach, placing the highest value on the growth and distribution of knowledge amongst the Team.
