Position Summary:

  • Design Manager is responsible for the Project Management of the design deliverables to assure the safest, most cost effective and buildable temporary and permanent works designs that meet with the Clients specification and industry standards, within budget and programme constraints;
  • To implement the management of design services compliant with Client and Balfour Beatty standards;
  • Very experienced professional with extensive knowledge of a discipline or first level manager of professionals with limited management authority.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage interfaces with all temporary works designs as required by the Temporary Works Coordinator;
  • Gain full approval of the designs from all approving authorities;
  • Maintain, manage and update the Design Submissions & Approvals register;
  • Produce Design Briefs to meet design requirements in support of Designer Services procurement;
  • Implement Design Start Up meetings with each design consultant;
  • Maintain a robust document control of all technical documentation and information;
  • Ensure involvement of stakeholders and construction input during design review meetings;
  • Manage the appropriate action and response to any reviewer comments;
  • Implement Designer competency assessments;
  • Ensure the designs have been subject to Independent Design Review;
  • Ensure compliance with the Group Minimum Engineering Expectations;
  • Manage all 3rd party consents to meet contract requirements, maintaining the Consents Register;
  • Produce a Design Management Plan in support of the Lead Design Manager;
  • Ensure provision of an agreed design delivery programme that meets with construction needs;
  • Implement Technical Change as required;
  • Manage all technical Queries or Requests for Information for timely issue and response;
  • Ensure that proposed Designers have been accepted by the Client prior to commencement (as required);
  • Ensure that the design created suits the methodology adopted for construction;
  • Ensure all associated design interfaces are identified and managed;
  • Technically appraise the Contract documentation in comparison to the Tender;
  • Support the Tender or attend the Tender handover;
  • Ensure that designs have been subject to Inter-Disciplinary Checking;
  • Obtain & manage risk in accordance with the CDM regulations;
  • Chair and manage regular Design Review meetings with Designer and Client;

Required Education & Experience:

  • Previous Design Management Experience and preferred knowledge Client Standards and procedures;
  • Progressing towards chartered status;
  • Preferred previous site experience in sector.
  • Degree / HNC / HND / in Construction related subject;
