Position Summary:

The Department of the Interior is devoted to protecting and preserving the natural resources of this great nation, including National Parks, Landmarks, and the well-being of communities, including those of Native American, Alaska Natives and affiliated Islanders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as pilot-in-command (PIC) of rotary wing aircraft for point to-to-point transportation, testing and evaluating aircraft, DOI fleet pilot training and assessing pilot qualifications.
  • Uses available resources to identify and resolve technical problems related to safety and adequacy of operations, operation policy/procedures, qualifications and proficiency of pilots, training deficiencies, suitability of aircraft for missions performed, efficient utilization of equipment, technical condition of aircraft and special equipment, and proper upkeep of flight logs and maintenance records. Briefs and debriefs management as required.
  • When requested, conducts in-house pilot, aircraft and/or equipment technical training to DOI aviation employees and inspectors for the purpose of standardizing procedures when adequate training sources are unavailable either from the manufacturer or other sources.
  • Leads or conducts surveillance and inspections of diverse types of rotary wing pilots to ensure safety compliance with contract requirements and OAS policy, Federal Aviation Regulations, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and other Federal regulations. Conducts initial general inspections of a contractor’s facility.
  • Independently approves/disapproves contractor pilots used in Government missions. When approved, issues a card authorizing use of the pilot in all requirements. When disapproved, provides a list of deficiencies and performs re-inspections as needed.
  • Provides OAS management and bureau partners with expert technical guidance and advice in the development, implementation, and resolution of a wide range of flight management and/or aviation maintenance issues related to safety, operational practices, potential contractor capability, contract modifications, policy and procedure development, and special use operations for both DOI fleet and contracted helicopter pilots and/or aircraft.

Required Education & Experience:

  • You will be required to have federal payments made by Direct Deposit.
  • Fluency in the English language;
  • You must submit ALL required documents and a completed questionnaire.
  • You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation/determination.
  • You will be required to operate a government motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid U.S. driver’s license. **You are required to submit proof of the driver’s license with your initial application.   • You must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid State driver’s license;
  • Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years;
