Position Summary:

As the Head of Technical Risk Management you will be accountable for leading and directing the delivery of the SBAFS Operational Risk Framework ensuring alignment to each Division across Sainsbury’s Bank (SB) & Argos Financial Services (AFS). With line management responsibility for the Change, Digital, IT and Data Risk Managers, the role holder will be accountable for leading and directing the quality of the Divisions’ ongoing Operational Risk management activities to support the technical business functions; ensuring that risks are fully and rigorously identified across SB &AFS and assessed via the Process Risk and Control Assessment (PRCA) methodology, and managed and reported in line with the SBAFS risk management framework and risk appetite. The role holder will be required to proactively plan for activity across their portfolio – feeding into the Risk Strategy, create and drive forward the annual SB & AFS PRCA plans, plan the delivery of treatment plans across each SB & AFS ExCo member on a risk-based approach, aligned to board risk appetite and own the strategic plans for your function. The role will provide evidence-based opinion on key strategic decisions whilst providing support and challenge to SB & AFS, working closely across the Divisions and other central functions. The role holder is expected to operate with ease across the Senior Management and Executive population across SB & AFS, with Divisional Risk Committee attendance, supporting, challenging and influencing their business decision making in relation to the risk profile for which they are accountable for.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Face off to Executive and Senior Management colleagues across SB & AFS and work with closely with them to develop and deliver strategic risk plans which satisfy both the Risk Agenda set by the
  • Board Risk Committee and the Strategy set by the Bank Board.
  • Oversee the completion of PRCA activity on the end to end processes to enhance cross-functional understanding and collaboration. Drive out control system synergies between SB and AFS and compliment integration activity whilst strengthening the control environment.
  • Support Enterprise-wide risk reporting on the Top Risk performance across SB and AFS.
  • Accountable for the definition of the annual delivery plan which feeds into the divisional risk strategy and mobilise their resources to deliver against these.
  • Oversee and ensure that the team conducts all risk management activity in line with the Operational Risk Management Framework, work with senior colleagues to rationalise the risk profile of Top Risks across SB & AFS.
  • Responsible for collaborating with the Change, Digital, IT and Data Management teams across SB and AFS to ensure that PRCA methodology is integrated to the change methodology and all significant changes launched to the business have been successfully progressed via PRCA to mitigate Operational and Compliance related risks.
  • Support the evolution of the Operational Risk Management Framework, working with the Framework team to implement accepted solutions.
  • Support the business functions on ad hoc activity, as required.
  • Responsible for overseeing the portfolio of Top Risk related Process Risk and Control Assessments’ delivery across the Divisions, make fully informed risk appetite decisions for the treatment of key risks and support the accountable individuals.
  • Ensure treatment plans for process and control fixing activity are created to return residual risk to within appetite and that ExCo members and Senior Management are supported with the timely completion with all associated activity including management through governance.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Proven leader and relationship manager across teams and in a matrix management organisation
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong relationship and stakeholder management skills with proven ability to influence at a Senior Management
  • Holistic understanding of the environment in which the Bank operates (economic, organisational and strategic) and the ability to generate high quality written output.
  • Broad demonstrable experience working within a 3 Lines of Defence model at a mid-senior level within the financial services industry.
  • Considerable in-depth experience working within a front line business at a mid-senior level within the financial services industry
  • Strong Project management skills in complex multi-functional projects
  • Strong awareness of the control environment within a financial services organisation
