Position Summary:

The Department of the Interior is devoted to protecting and preserving the natural resources of this great nation, including National Parks, Landmarks, and the well-being of communities, including those of Native American, Alaska Natives and affiliated Islanders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct special investigations or studies and present the conclusion(s) in a comprehensive written report.
  • Contribute to the development of the OAS Safety Management System (SMS) processes. Assist in the contract award processes by evaluating the SMS component included in vendor offers. Perform onsite SMS assessments of contractor operations.
  • Conduct factual data analysis and develop conclusions, contributing factors, and recommendations for aircraft accident prevention purposes.
  • Establish security at the investigation site, procures guard services, and coordinate investigation in cooperation with appropriate agencies but maintains overall control and leadership of the DOI investigation.
  • Conduct oral and/or written presentations to various departmental aviation groups as part of the Interior Aviation Safety and Aircraft Accident Prevention Program.
  • Advise leadership in the development and administration of the Departmental Aviation Safety Program and recommends program improvements.
  • Work with bureau field organizations to identify high risk or aviation program deficiencies and develop suitable resolutions assuring compatibility between policy requirements and mission objectives.
  • As Investigator-in-Charge (IIC), conduct investigations of aircraft accidents and serious aircraft incidents, including those involving Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS).

Required Education & Experience:

  • You must submit ALL required documents and a completed questionnaire.
  • Fluency in the English language;
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Valid State driver’s license;
  • You must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • You will be required to have federal payments made by Direct Deposit.
  • A valid state driver’s license is required to drive to various field locations as required. Therefore, you must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation/determination.
